The main function of Nitric Oxide is the delivery of messages between the cells of the body. This also plays an important role in the control of blood circulation and regulation of activities of the brain, liver, lungs, stomach, kidney and other organs.
With regards to muscle building, NO impacts release of adrenaline and other hormones. NO is also believed to accelerate the times for growth and recovery, as well as increase the flow of blood, thereby delivering more nutrient to muscles to aid in their growth.
Many athletes also take NO supplements with the belief that they can enable them to workout longer and harder, although scientists are still investigating evidence to support this theory. That said, a 2010 study concluded in support of NO being used by older men, as this resulted in an increase in their anaerobic threshold.
The anaerobic threshold is the point at which lactic acid begins its accumulation in the muscles, typically after a 3 week period.
Nitric Oxide (NO) Dosage
While clear dosing guidelines have not yet been established, NO is typically taken in the form of a powder that is mixed with a liquid. The liquids are then absorbed into the body faster and more efficiently than would pills, tablets or capsules.
As with any product that contains amino acids, there is a risk of overdose, with too much arginine leading to nausea, diarrhea and weakness. It is therefore important to consult a doctor before beginning to take NO – just as you would with any other supplement.
